The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Major Role in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has taken over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

Australia's chief selector the selector has declared that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that remained unresolved.

Initial reports from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches set to start on the 21st of November in Perth.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about the likelihood of being involved.

"We know that time is getting short and there are permutations around that, not just the physical problem, but other factors as well," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he's going to play a key capacity. With luck it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand recently after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of back injuries, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his recovery plan to make the squad for the contest.

The selector indicated that he did not know if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his recovery but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and confirmed that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the initial game as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs anyway. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for a short period, we opted to take a cautious route."
